How can we give small business access to reliable merchandising services?

About the project

Having worked on a simple merchandising platform for a multinational retailer, I noticed how costly it is for them to keep track of their products in retail store. This is something tha small businesses can’t afford even though it is of great importance. That’s why I took on this project to try to create the concept of “merchandising as a service”

Understanding the Business

About the company

Merch is a merchandising startup. It allows distributors and independent manufacturer to keeps tabs on their products in retail stores without having to keep in-house merchandising teams. The platform is used by Merch’s agents who trach the client’s products in retails stores as well as a back-office team that handles flags and alerts

How it works

Companies sign up to merch.io. The back office team adds their products, product information, such as price, facings, promos and available stores. They also can accept and manage orders and shipments information.

The app then releases an optimized plan for agents who can then make visits to their assigned stores to check the products. The back office team then gets real-time reports, statistics, and alerts to any violations and routes them to the clients

Low Fidelity Wireframes

The App

The tablet app focuses on minimizing the number of options the agents has when performing their task. This should result in a smaller margin for error and thus improved efficiency

Providing the agents with a simple interface, with no distractions, as well as a log of their own activity aims to minimize support querries and error management for the back-office team

Web

The administration panel focus mainly on tracking and visibility. Basically, all the information could be contained in two or three pages. However, the navigation pattern we designed was more of a sorting and rearaging mechanism for the information contained in the Database

02. Visual Design

Design system

For the mobile app, we adopted Apple’s Human interface design guidelines to the letter. However, we created our own design system for the dashboard in order to accomodate for all the functionalities and features that we felt wouldn’t necessarily be best served by an of the shelf design system. We caled it “Materialish design”

Grid system

  • Columns: 12

Product reviews

Agents are promted to fill the review sheet for each store and fill all input for each product in order to validate the visit. Moreover, if there are any orders placed by the store, agents are automatically redirected to the orders page as soon as they finish their report

Web

Dashboard

The dashboard basicaly provides an overview of the work in terms of goals and completion rate. One more important feature is the alerts and the activity log which allow the back-office team to interact with the ground teams.

Web

Clients

Most of the pages on the administration panel are basically filtering the information and displaying it in a way that can be useful in a certain context.

For instance, the clients page in great for a status update with the client as it gives an overview of what’s happening with their merchandise as well as providing the opportunity to export the information in PDF format for quick sharing
