On dignity

A looming DNF, a strange sense of calm, and making a stand

A looming DNF, a strange sense of calm, and making a stand

Sep 23, 2024

A big weight fell off my shoulders the moment decided to do the bike leg even if I miss the swim cutoff. I feel like it would be a dignified way to lose. More importantly, I feel like I'm doing right by myself for taking the chance to exercise my hard earned capabilities.

I can say with total conviction, that I would still go for the full thing if my knee is okay. No sense aggravating the injury for a DNF but if it's alright by then, I will give it a shot.

I'm worried about how I will feel stepping out if the water. I will sure be nauseated and dizzy like I've never been before. So bike and run are always contingent on getting out of the water in one piece, be that on time or not.

In any case. The thoughts have been percolating in my brain since yesterday. I'm convinced that I swam faster than 3min per 100. Barring a terrible current (which would cancel out on the way back), there's just no way I was swimming that hard that slow. Also, there were other people with me and I did keep up relatively ok.

I have that all familiar overtraining headache today, but I'm calmer. Even though I'm putting thought in the prospect of defeat, I think I have a good shot.
